The preparation for the Olympic Games in Sochi is in full swing, including the construction of many hotels, which should be able to accommodate guests of the Olympics. Meanwhile, experts still believe that after the main sports event in 2014, these hotels might well remain empty. Government officials, developers, management companies and consultants discussed the prospects of new hotel projects in Sochi during a conference entitled "Hotel Real Estate 2011", organized by AHConferences.

In early June of this year, we released the CRE 100, which is our annual ranking of the most influential persons in the commercial real estate market. We tried to track the results achieved by the most successful market players in 2010 – H1 2011. This is the fifth ranking since the pre-crisis 2007. The VII annual ceremony and gala dinner of Commercial Real Estate Moscow Awards 2010 that gathered some 620 guests were held at Expocenter on April 23. The best facilities developed in 2009 were awarded the “Golden Brick.” A team of “brave spirits” believing in the future of the market stands behind each project. The heroes of the year that was so hard on the sector repeatedly emphasized their hope as they mounted the platform that the worst time was already behind us. “Simply the best,” – chanted the winners in the refrain of the concluding song. This is true indeed!

Understanding each other was the main reason why guests came to the 12th Russian Breakfast held by IM Events as part of MIPIM Exhibition held in Cannes.

The MIPIM of this year appeared to be more optimistic compared to the previous one. The participants were sure to see the first signs of recovery on the market. They were pleased to see each other as delegates to this show, standing near the stands, participating in MIPIM events, conferences, parties, yachts, especially leased cafes... However, the question remains: would those optimistic communications result in real transactions on the market? Developers are still very hesitant to start new projects and exit the existing ones. The reason is very simple: the low market demand along with low capitalization rates. The residential segment was the first in Russia to push the market demand higher. On the Cote d'Azur, the market experts agreed that residential properties would bring other real estate segments back to life.

The annual MAPIC international exhibition took place in Cannes on November 18-20 of this year. The main reason for the Russian retail real estate community to come to France was to socialize with their global counterparts. Anyway, it took them much time and efforts to find suitable discussion partners. This year, a number of Russian representatives in Cannes went down to all-time low.

The ProEstate 2009 International Real Estate Investment Forum was just held from September 3 to 5, 2009. It was the meeting place for companies that survived the past crisis. It was most pleasant to see that there were quite a lot of them. At the inauguration of the PROEstate, the real estate market was compared with schoolchildren. In a year they obviously matured somewhat and understood that they could easily be dismissed for bad behavior.

300 participants from the commercial real estate market. They included representatives from all areas of the market: investors, developers, architects, managers and construction companies. “The Market’s Future Is in Our Hands!” was the slogan of this year’s summit, which provided the participants with a rather difficult task of finding solutions for the
market’s future expansion.
