How to select people I think, when a person is interested, when it’s apparent that he/she wants to work and possesses knowledge, developing the necessary skills is possible. All people have different personal traits. Someone enters the working rhythm immediately without any problems, while others need to get their bearings first. What’s most important is to see the talented people. Sometimes a person speaks well in the office but slips up at the property. Once we were seeking a head engineer. There were two candidates: one spoke very smoothly during the interview, we liked everything, while the other got confused, searched for words and couldn’t seemingly pull it up. But I decided we still had to watch them both at the property. The first – the one who said all the right things – was unable to demonstrate and explain fundamental things at the property. But the other – the one who broke down during the interview – was in his element at the property, immediately oriented himself at the site and didn’t just give an assessment of the situation, but also suggested several bits of practical advice. At the time, this was kind of a revelation for me. And now I’m absolutely certain that in our business people simply have to be watched at work. It frequently happens that people are able to present themselves well, yet they can’t handle their work. I quickly sense whether or not a person is one of ours. This isn’t just intuition, but also experience – in life and professiom – which helps choosing the right people.

02.08.2011 Konstantin Kovalev, Managing Partner of Blackwood
Working through good connectionsI am ready to hire a man on someone else's recommendation, but I always send him to our HR department to test. Many people want to be managers, but in reality they are no more than secretaries. If this or that candidate finally agrees with that, then we continue to work together. We will never hire a well-connected person to just sit and get his salary. We have a commercial firm. Despite the fact that some friends and relatives of friends are our employees, I demand from them the same things as any other employees should do. In case of failure, I fire them. In this case, I tell those people "We are not inclined to torture you, but you should not torture us either."
